Coffee plays a vital role in one’s life. It is more than just a drink. It helps an individual to start up their day and even provides various health benefits. Coffee is not only a popular beverage here in the Philippines but also worldwide. As per statistics, billion cups of coffee are being consumed daily. Today, various coffee beans suppliers in the Philippines became popular due to the increase in consumers’ demand. The Philippines has various rich lands where it’s possible to cultivate, grow, and produce quality coffee products. They have the goal of delivering only fresh, and the best quality of coffee in every way possible. Filipinos do enjoy the rich taste and aroma of these coffee products. Majority of the people kick-off their day with a cup of coffee.
A nation of coffee drinkers
According to a study conducted by Kantar Worldpanel Philippines, Filipinos shifted from being moderate to heavy coffee drinkers. Heavy drinkers are those who purchase and consume coffee products thrice a week, or 126 times a year. In comparison to the regular coffee drinkers, they only purchase twice a week or 81 times a year. The sales growth was driven mainly by the increase of 3-in-1 coffee mix purchases in markets specifically in Metro Manila, South Luzon, and even in Mindanao. For the past two years, this growth has been consistent. It is then concluded that 93 percent of Filipino homes and those homes with older persons, purchase coffee mixes once a week. The study made possible in collaboration of Philippine panel which is also part of the London-based Kantar Worldpanel network.
There are numerous sprouting coffee shops in Metro Manila and even in the highly urbanized cities wherein their targets are mostly students who play games online, hangout to surf the web, review for the upcoming examinations, mingle with friends, or even unwind why enjoying a slow sip of their favorite drink. There are approximately 20 coffeehouse chains currently operating in the country. This kind of industry is becoming popular and Filipino consumers are really into it. There’s also a spread of coffee concoctions and recipes, Filipino-style, and coffee vending machines that usually can be found in crowded areas like public markets or bus terminals.
To give you a brief background about coffee, it was first brought to our country by a Franciscan friar way back in 1749. After water, it is indeed the second most consumed liquid in the world and the second most purchased item next to sauces and seasonings, the study showed. Regardless of the type of coffee, whether it is instant or gourmet, both coffees are enjoyed by Filipinos. Majority of them drink this to boost alertness as well as to improve relaxation.
Coffee: Filipinos’ staple beverage
The result of the study conducted shows that almost every Filipino household buy coffee specifically the 3-in-1 varieties. Having said so, coffee now holds the title of being the Filipino’s staple beverage. It remains to be the go-to drink of Filipinos to help them fuel their day and boost up their energy. it is concluded that about 320,000 more houses are purchasing coffee mixes in just the South Luzon area alone. If we’re going to include NCR and Mindanao, consumers, in an average, are spending respectively, P193 ($4.19) and P110 ($2.39) more for their coffee fix. The seen increase is also consistent for the last two years. The on-going coffee craze in our country is said to be reflected in the Filipino’s shopping habits, as seen in the increase purchases of such products over the past year.
The love for coffee of the Filipinos continues to grow stronger as the year goes by. The data being gathered depicts the Filipino’s openness to embrace different formats of coffee products available in the market. The growth for this category is expected to increase in the coming years.
Here in the Philippines, coffee indeed has a history as rich as its flavor. Tracing back in the 1800s, Barako charged five times the price of other Asian coffee beans. This scenario allows us to become the fourth largest exporter. Currently, the coffee consumption of the Filipinos outweighs its productions. With this problem in line, we import coffee product from our neighboring countries to fill in the gap. Vietnam is able to produce thousands of metric tons of coffee more than enough to supply global demand. On the other hand, Myanmar was recently addressed as Asia’s newest origin of specialty coffee. Fortunately, there are still remaining places here in our country where coffee has gone through the proper production process from seed to cup. The big challenge now is to make this production sustainable to be able to meet the demands of the Filipino market itself and later on become profitable.
