New school building in Mogpog, offers safer, flood-resistant classrooms for students

MOGPOG, Marinduque — Students in Mogpog, Marinduque can now look forward to a safer and more conducive learning environment, thanks to a newly completed single-storey school building featuring two modern classrooms.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Marinduque District Engineering Office, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Marinduque Division, recently finished construction of the 180.75-square meter facility. Funded under the DepEd’s 2023 Basic Educational Facilities Fund (BEFF), the ₱5.3 million project is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade education infrastructure in disaster-prone areas.

The new structure replaces an older building that was often plagued by flooding due to its location in a low-lying area. In addition to flood damage, the previous classrooms suffered from poor ventilation and an uncomfortably low ceiling height, making them unsuitable for quality learning.

“The old classrooms were not only vulnerable to flooding, but also lacked proper air circulation, making it an uncomfortable and unhealthy environment for learning, especially during extreme heat,” said DPWH-Marinduque District Engineer Richard Emmanuel P. Ragragio.

Built on elevated ground, the new building is designed to withstand the impacts of natural disasters and the country’s increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. With improved ceiling height, enhanced ventilation, and flood-resilient features, the classrooms can now comfortably accommodate up to 40 students each.

School officials have welcomed the project, praising it as a significant step toward modernizing public school infrastructure in underserved communities. They also expressed hope that the facility will serve as a model for future educational projects across the Mimaropa region.

“This development not only provides our learners with a safe and comfortable space, but it also shows what can be achieved when government agencies work together for the benefit of our children,” a local school administrator shared.

The completion of this project underscores the government’s commitment to creating inclusive and disaster-resilient learning spaces, particularly in geographically challenged areas like Marinduque. — Marinduquenews.com
