DOH Mimaropa refutes endorsement of herbal products

Department of Health (DOH) – Mimaropa (Oriental/Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo today warned the public that the regional office nor any of its officials are not endorsing any herbal medicines and food supplement of whatsoever as has been circulating over the internet.

“I am not endorsing nor have I given my approval or any testimonials in support to any herbal and food supplements claiming to have therapeutic and dietary result”, Dr. Janairo stated.

“I also advised the public to always check whether the products they purchase. Although several herbs contain medicinal properties, there are other substances that maybe harmful and toxic If taken in excess”, he added.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA has directed all food and dietary supplement manufacturers, distributors and advertisers, to put the disclaimer “Mahalagang Paalala: Ang (Name of Product) ay Hindi Gamot at Hindi Dapat Gamiting Panggamot sa Anumang Uri ng Sakit” in the packaging of their products, as well as in all advertising, promotion and sponsorship materials.

This message informs the public that the product is not a medicinal drug and should not be used to treat symptoms of any disease.

The FDA’s reiteration of this requirement is in accordance with the decision of the Court of Appeals on 28 November 2014, which upheld the DOH-FDA Administrative Order 2010-0008.
