World Environment Day 2020: A day of giving for advocates

BOAC, Marinduque – World Environment Day is observed across the world every June 5 to raise awareness about the environment and the importance of conserving the planet. The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is “Biodiversity” with the slogan “Time for Nature” — a call to action to combat the accelerating species loss and degradation of the natural world.

It is a momentous event for Marinduque Council for Environmental Concerns (MACEC), Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc. (PMPI), Marinduque State College (MSC) and the Local Government of Santa Cruz as they responded to the call of serving the people in mining affected areas in the municipality of Mogpog and Santa Cruz.

One hundred ninety eight total beneficiaries who are mining victims and petitioners of the case against Marcopper benefited to the distribution of food packs, washable facemasks and vegetable seeds.

“One way to celebrate world environment day is to plant more and more trees for the future generation but we must not forget those who are defending our environment and those who are fighting for their basic human rights, and I think that’s the best way to celebrate World Environment Day 2020” says Elizabeth Manggol, Secretariat Head of MACEC. – Marinduquenews.com
