DPWH completes P6.6M solar-powered school building in Sta. Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Marinduque – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Marinduque District Engineering Office has successfully completed the construction of a solar-powered school building worth ₱6.6 million at Matalaba National High School in Santa Cruz, Marinduque.

The project was funded through the Basic Education Facilities Fund (BEFF) and was designed to address the shortage of classrooms in the school. Prior to the construction, students and teachers had to hold classes in alternative spaces such as the Parent Teacher Association Hall, library, and computer laboratory after three existing classrooms were severely damaged by storms that hit the province in previous years.

The newly built structure features durable concrete posts, footings, footing tie beams, trusses, stairs, ramps, slabs, waterproofing, ceilings, and other essential materials to ensure stability and longevity. In addition, the building includes a spacious and well-ventilated classroom equipped with an electric fan, providing a conducive learning environment for students.

A key highlight of the project is the installation of a large solar panel on the roof, designed to supply energy to the building’s electrical equipment in case of power outages from the local electricity cooperative. This renewable energy feature ensures that the school can continue operations even during power interruptions, benefiting both students and faculty members.

DPWH emphasized that the completion of this solar-powered school building marks a significant step in improving educational infrastructure in Marinduque, providing students with a more stable and comfortable learning environment.

The new facility stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing educational resources and fostering resilience against natural calamities in remote and disaster-prone areas. — Marinduquenews.com
