Marinduque NHS, senior high school on the rise

The Marinduque National High School (MNHS) is the mother school of Marinduque. Most of the students are from the neighboring towns of Boac, Gasan, Mogpog, Sta. Cruz, Torrijos, and Buenavista. The school is strategically located in Barangay Isok 1, Boac, Marinduque, which is considered as the capital of Marinduque. This is the industrial hub of the province, different establishments like restaurants, shops, and other government establishments are also located here.

This School Year (SY) 2016-2017, MNHS has a total enrollment of 4,263 learners. 746 of which are Senior High School (SHS) students; 749 are Grade 10 learners, 836 are Grade 9 learners, 965 Grade 8 learners, and 967 Grade 7 learners.

Through the assistance of the SHS coordinator, Mr. Rodel Magyaya, the school has successfully established partnership with different industries in relation to the work immersions of its students. Marinduque State College have already committed to take in students who are in the line of Computer Hardware and Servicing. For Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Insigne Welding Shop, Leal Welding Shop, Renz Welding Shop, and Babiera Welding Shop, have committed to share their expertise during the student immersion.

Meanwhile, Kusinasa Plaza, Good Chow, Tahanan sa Isok, La concha, Monserrat de Boac, and Boac Hotel have expressed their willingness to take in Cookery students. In addition, Doughboys Bakeshop, Solomon Bakery, and Krisna’s Bakeshop have also committed to share their expertise in the field of Cookery. For Electrical Installation Maintenance, MARELCO confirmed that they will take in Electrical Installation Maintenance students. The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for this immersion is expected to be finalized by June 2017.

“We have several meetings with stakeholders, especially parents, alumni and other partners. The Marinduque National High School is really prepared for the Senior High School implementation even with some problems in terms of chairs, classrooms, materials and equipment as well as teachers. As SHS Coordinator, I am really sure that the teachers will support the implementation of the SHS program. We are confident that it will equip learners with skills, making sure that the graduates are ready for work, entrepreneurship and/or higher education,” said Mr. Magyaya.

Based on the initial enrollment, as of June 16, 2016, there are 746 enrolled students. The students were distributed into two tracks: Academic Track and Technology-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) track. The Academic Track has two strands: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) which has 119 learners, and General Academic Strand (GAS) which has 155 learners. The TVL track has 472 learners who were divided into three strands: TVL-1A, TVL – Home Economics (HE), TVL- Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Also under the TVL strand are five TVL specializations: Bread and Pastry Production with 104 learners, Contact Center Services with 81 learners, Technical Drafting with 30 learners, Shielded Metal Arc Welding with 133 learners, and Electrical Installation and Maintenance with 122 learners.

MNHS constructed 3-storey building with 9 classrooms funded by DepEd CY2014 and 2015 BEFF and FY 2015 106651 Regular 2015. At present, the school is also constructing a 4-storey with 20 classrooms which is estimated to be completed by June 2017.

Text books, modules, and teachers guide were already received by the school’s supply officer and were distributed to students in Personal Development, Pre-calculus, English for Academic and Professional Purposes, Bread and Pastry, and Cookery. Likewise, materials and equipment for Technical-Vocational Department were already procured.

There may be challenges encountered during the implementation of SHS like learning materials, teacher’s salary, inadequate number of teachers, and classrooms. Still MNHS, is positive in gearing the mission and vision of the Department of Education.
